Respiro helps a NSW emergency services organisation deliver a next-generation encrypted inter-data-centre optical network

Case Study - Emergency DC-2

OUR CLIENT:

A NSW Emergency Services Organisation

THEIR BUSINESS CHALLENGE:

Our client is a NSW emergency services organisation responsible for protecting the community across a large and diverse geographic footprint, relying on a resilient network to support frontline operations, dispatch and communications at hundreds of locations.

The organisation’s existing inter-data-centre communications equipment relied on legacy optical infrastructure that limited capacity, resilience, and flexibility. As operational and connectivity demands grew, the network was becoming increasingly unable to support the organisation’s future requirements.

Modernising the optical network at this scale required significant investment, and the organisation needed a clear, well-evidenced network strategy and business case to secure the funding and executive support necessary to proceed.

RESPIRO'S APPROACH:

We developed the network strategy and defined a target-state architecture built around DWDM equipment to deliver more resilient, flexible, and centrally managed connectivity across the organisation’s off-premises and on-premises data centres. The deployed technology also met strict cyber requirements, including line-rate hardware-based encryption aligned with the Australian Signals Directorate’s HACE (High Assurance Cryptographic Equipment) requirements for protecting SECRET and TOP SECRET data.

Respiro then designed and implemented the technology, including testing the new dark fibre optical connections with specialist optical test equipment to confirm the fibre met the standards required to support 100G wavelengths. After installation and commissioning, Respiro used its test equipment to run 10Gig RFC2544 tests across each wavelength between the data centres.

BUSINESS OUTCOMES:

The work gave the organisation a clear path to network modernisation by replacing legacy inter-data-centre transport infrastructure with a modern, high-capacity DWDM optical network supporting wavelengths up to 400G. It also created a stronger foundation for future bandwidth growth, resilience, and technology initiatives.

By designing and implementing the new wavelength based network, Respiro helped the organisation to:

  • Replace legacy transport infrastructure with a modern, high-capacity DWDM platform supporting wavelengths up to 400G across interconnected data centre sites
  • Improve network resilience and diversity in support of critical inter-data centre connectivity
  • Build a strong foundation for future bandwidth scalability and technology initiatives
  • Deliver and demonstrate a HACE (High Assurance Cryptographic Equipment) solution, as stipulated by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), to protect SECRET and TOP SECRET data
