THEIR BUSINESS CHALLENGE:
The council relied on a SCADA environment to support critical infrastructure operations. That environment was protected by legacy virtual firewalls running on ageing virtualisation hardware, creating a need to modernise the firewall layer as part of the broader platform migration.
As the council’s SCADA virtual environment moved to new hardware and a new virtualisation platform, its legacy virtual firewalls also needed to be replaced and migrated. The work had to preserve protection for the SCADA environment while keeping outages to a minimum.
The firewall migration had to be completed quickly because the broader SCADA platform migration was already underway and being delivered by a third party engaged by the council.
RESPIRO'S APPROACH:
We were engaged by the third party responsible for the SCADA virtual environment migration to deliver the firewall migration in parallel. Drawing on experience across multiple firewall vendor technologies, we developed a migration strategy within two days of engagement and began moving the firewalls from the old virtualisation platform to the new one.
We performed the firewall upgrades during the migration, moving the council’s SCADA environment onto current, supported firewall software without requiring a separate project.
The migration was delivered within the timeframe required by the broader SCADA platform migration, helping the council keep its critical infrastructure protected throughout the transition and decommission the legacy virtualisation hardware platforms.
BUSINESS OUTCOMES:
The engagement gave the council upgraded, supported firewalls protecting its SCADA environment on the new virtualisation platform. It also kept the firewall work aligned with the broader platform migration, reducing the need for separate change windows and helping maintain protection during the transition.
